We’re here to share what we know — but don’t take it as medical advice. Talk to your medical provider if you have questions.

You might have a lot of questions at the start of your new Curology routine. Starting a new acne treatment comes with a lot of questions—especially when you’re introducing new active ingredients into your skincare routine.

Curology is custom prescription skincare catered to your skin’s specific needs. Sticking to a simple routine and talking to your dermatology provider can help during the introduction period. You can also regularly refer to your personalized Routine from your account dashboard—it explains how and when to use each product in your box.

Here are five things to keep in mind when you’re first starting your custom skincare routine by Curology.

1. Keep your skincare routine simple.

Curology Skincare Journey Tip: Keep It Simple

The key to smooth sailing with your new skincare routine: just take it easy. Stick to your cleanser, personalized prescription formula(s), and moisturizer while your skin adjusts. And don’t forget the SPF! Of course, follow the instructions your licensed dermatology provider gave you, and reach out to them if you have questions as you get started!

It is generally recommended to skip exfoliation—chemical and physical alike (at least at first). Avoid active ingredients like BHA and AHAs, vitamin C, and retinol—too many powerful ingredients at once can lead to irritation. You can incorporate skincare products with these ingredients back into your routine later!

The other reason to simplify your routine? To cut out products with potentially pore-clogging or irritating ingredients—that includes makeup

2. Make your skin regimen consistent.

Curology Skincare Journey Tip: Stay Consistent

Think of your Curology routine as your nightly self-care ritual—at first, that may be easier said than done. You may forget some nights or find that it’s better to apply your formula every other night (more on this in the next section). No matter who you are, it can be hard to implement changes to your daily routine!

If you’re struggling to get into the rhythm of using your personalized formula, it can help to set reminders! We’re a big fan of leaving ourselves love notes on the bathroom mirror: Hello, gorgeous! Sweet dreams & sweet creams 💜

3. Talk to your Curology provider.

Curology Skincare Journey Tip: Talk To Your Curology Provider

When you sign up for Curology, you’ll be able to consult, as needed, with a licensed dermatology provider who prescribes your personalized formula.

Your dermatology provider will be with you throughout your skincare journey, but their expertise can be particularly helpful as you adjust to your new active ingredients.

Check in with your provider if you experience dryness, irritation, or purging (i.e., the temporary breakouts you might experience when starting a new acne treatment). Purging is a common side effect when adjusting to tretinoin and other active ingredients. If you’re experiencing skin sensitivity, you may consider applying your personalized formula according to this schedule:

  • Weeks 1-2: Apply Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights.

  • Weeks 3-4: Apply every other night.

  • Weeks 5-6: Apply every night.

4. Be patient with progress.

Curology Skincare Journey Tip: Be Patient, Healing Takes Time

Patience is a virtue, so they say—but it’s hard when you’re waiting for your acne to go away. If only getting rid of acne were that simple! While a good skincare routine can help get your breakouts under control, there are inevitable setbacks on the road to clear skin.

So, how long does it take to get results? Many Curology patients see an improvement in 1-2 months, but it can be even longer before you reach your ultimate skin goals. Your routine is a lifelong good habit that benefits your skin’s health.

So keep going! Remember that your formula can be adjusted for your ever-evolving skin’s needs.

5. Just be yourself.

Curology Skincare Journey Tip: Be Yourself

Everyone’s skin is unique. So, too, is everyone’s skincare journey. Your milestones are your own and no one else’s.

We’re in this together. So while it can be helpful to listen to others’ experiences, try not to compare yourself! After all, comparison is the thief of joy.
