We’re here to share what we know — but don’t take it as medical advice. Talk to your medical provider if you have questions.

In this article

Curology was founded because we wanted to make dermatology more accessible to acne patients. Since we’ve grown as a startup, we’re more aware than ever that barriers of care go beyond cost and appointment availability—trust in your medical provider is essential. If you’re a patient of color, transgender, or come from another background that faces additional obstacles to care, it can be especially challenging to find a dermatology provider.

At Curology, we know good intentions must be paired with concrete actions. That’s why all of our dermatology providers receive specialized training to prepare them for working with diverse patient populations. We also know that choosing any medical practitioner can be a big decision. To make it easier, we want to be transparent about the training Curology dermatology providers receive.

Diversity and inclusion training for dermatology providers

In addition to receiving robust training on how to promote inclusivity and accessibility in communications with patients, our dermatology providers receive education on the following topics when they join Curology:

  • Acne in melanin-rich skin. Focuses on unique characteristics of acne in skin of color (the medical term for dark skin tones) and how to treat it.

  • Dermatology in melanin-rich skin: Focuses on skin conditions besides acne in patients with melanin-rich skin. (We don’t necessarily treat these conditions, but we do recommend patients see in-person medical providers when necessary).

  • Treating the LGBTQIA+ community. Focuses on how to be gender-affirming in patient interactions, as well as to increase awareness about barriers to care LGBTQIA+ patients face.

  • Cultural sensitivity in treating BIPOC patients. Focuses on disparities in dermatology treatment that the BIPOC community faces and develops strategies and skills to provide treatment in a sensitive way.

What makes our providers skincare experts

Our team of dermatology providers is made up of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who have trained extensively in dermatology. They work closely alongside our dermatologists, who are graduates of leading medical schools and have completed dermatology residencies accredited by the American Board of Dermatology. Together, our medical providers have over 1,200 years of combined medical experience, and this number continues to grow!

We value lifelong learning and support our providers in furthering their education in many ways. This includes daily lunch & learns, regular sessions to discuss the newest dermatology research, sessions that our dermatologists present to the rest of the medical team on various dermatology diagnoses and topics, and ample time to attend conferences and outside lectures. We are also committed to ensuring all our medical providers are highly trained and confident in treating patients of all backgrounds.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging is and will always be at the forefront of how we approach our business. Empowering people to love their skin and celebrate their truth is a top priority for us. We are working hard to have a medical team that is diverse and multigenerational, all while providing the best quality care to our patients.

Melanin-rich skin is very well-represented in our patient population, and our providers have broad experience with treating this skin type. As mentioned earlier, they attend specialized lectures during their training devoted to treating melanin-rich skin and can also continue to attend regular sessions focused on these topics.
