We’re here to share what we know — but don’t take it as medical advice. Talk to your medical provider if you have questions.

Summary

To celebrate Acne Awareness Month, we're sharing some of the real skin stories of the 5.5 million+ Curology patients we’ve served. Here’s our conversation with Rheanna—she’s 31, a licensed vocational nurse, based in California, and has been using Curology since 2019. She tried Curology, took a break, then came back and wished she started even sooner to put an end to a painful cycle of acne.

This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Hi Rheanna. How long have you been using Curology?  I got my first box back in 2019 and then I took a little break, but I've been using it consistently since 2022, so it's been a good couple years. How did you find out about Curology?  I think I saw it in an ad on Instagram.  What problems were you experiencing that brought you to Curology?  My before and afters are pretty drastic. They were very irritated, very angry looking. Oftentimes it was actually painful to get the pus out of my acne instead of just pinching it or pinching it like a normal person. I would actually get my nails and try to just pull the skin right off. That's how desperate I was to get stuff out. But, there were basically wounds on my face and it just made it a hundred times worse every time…it was self-sabotage. I couldn't stop touching my face and making it worse.

Rheanna B&A

What was your aha, ‘this is working’ moment? I remember before I started using Curology, I would wake up and inspect myself in the mirror and see like, okay, what new ones popped up today? What's different about my face today? And it was just a horrible morning routine that I had and I would just get in my head and it would start off the day terribly. But once Curology started softening my face, getting rid of the redness that I hated, that's when it started to click.  What’s your daily routine? I do use the Curology moisturizer. It's very convenient that my local Target carries the moisturizer there, so I just grab it when I need it. The next one I do want to use that’s  on my list is the SPF. I'm really interested in trying that one out.  What was signing up for Curology like? It was super quick. It just asks for your concerns and you upload a couple pictures in your portal. You can upload your progress photos. So however many days or months you want to go and upload something to compare, it's really cool.  Do you talk about your skin journey with people? I do. One of my coworkers, she worked night shift and night shift messes with your body, with your hormones, with everything. She was complaining about her skin and I showed her my before and afters because I only share if we feel like I have the same issues that they have. I don't push it on them or anything. But, since she wanted to hear my story too, I showed her my pictures and they were very drastic and she started it. She loved it too. Yeah, she signed up and after a couple months her face was really clear too.  What is your acne like now? Before Curology, I feel like mine was very hormonal. I'd get them, I'd have an acne mustache where the acne would pop up in the most horrible random places where acne wouldn't show up for other people. But I haven't had anything pop up in years. Nothing has come up. I wasn't sure if it would be able to cure my hormonal stuff. I thought it was a different connection or something, but it's been working for me. I haven't had to do anything extra. What advice would you have for yourself six years ago based on your experience today?  Oh my gosh. Start sooner. The thing that killed me the most along with the acne is all the money spent and wasted on trial and error stuff. When you find out, oh this ingredient and this ingredient can't be used together, you're like, great. I just spent money on these things and it just added more and more anxiety. With Curology, I don't need to worry about what works together. It's already built for me. It's much better. I would definitely tell myself to start sooner.

Rheanna Pull Quote

Is there one word or a brief thought about what you're most proud of in your skin journey? My mental health is much better.  We're our own worst critic and we pick ourselves apart. No matter how good your skin is or how bad your skin is, everyone is different. But, this just has just given me freedom just to walk out the door without the bad morning routine that I had. Now I don't even have to look in the mirror. I know I'm good, which is crazy. How different from here to then was.My hair was like my mask before, but now I bring my hair back and then if I do wear makeup, I just grab my tinted moisturizer and it's enough. Don't have to go full coverage. I like when my little freckles show.
