3 types of dark spots

Dark spots come in a variety of shapes and colors that can vary based on your skin tone. Let’s break down a few types of dark spots that we treat!

Melasma

Melasma

Melasma is a chronic condition caused by a variety of factors including genetics, hormones, and exposure to sun and heat. Melasma can look like irregularly shaped brown or gray patches in symmetrical patterns on the face.

Sun spots

Sun spots

Sun spots (aka age spots or liver spots) are caused by sun damage. Most sun spots can be prevented by practicing sun protection.

Post-acne dark spots

Post-acne dark spots

Post-acne dark spots or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (sometimes mistaken for acne scars) is left behind as blemishes heal. Unlike scars, PIH will fade over time on its own.

Dark spots explained

Your skin naturally produces a pigment called melanin, which gives it its color. Dark spots are typically places where too much pigment is present (hence the term hyperpigmentation).

Common causes of post-breakout dark spots include inflammation (like acne!), prolonging inflammation by picking at the skin (hands off!), and sun exposure (wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30).
